Maretimo Gardens

This project involves the extension and reorganisation of a two-storey semi-detached house in Maretimo Gardens East, Blackrock. The proposal combines a single-storey rear and side extension with internal alterations and the introduction of an enclosed roof garden above the new accommodation.

The existing house sits within a settled suburban context characterised by narrow side passages, private rear gardens and close neighbouring relationships. The design responds to these conditions by concentrating new accommodation at ground level and using the roofscape as an additional outdoor space rather than increasing the overall height or visual prominence of the building. The roof space is punctuated by vertical slots that reflect the nearby Martello Tower.

The extension accommodates a new kitchen, utility, garage and storage spaces, reorganising the ground floor around a stronger connection to the garden. Above, the enclosed roof terrace creates a sheltered external room with privacy carefully considered through its positioning and enclosure.

Internally, the project focuses on improving the flow and usability of the existing house through a series of modest but deliberate interventions. The new spaces are designed to feel integrated with the original dwelling rather than read as separate additions.

The overall approach is restrained and site-responsive, using the extension to clarify the relationship between house, boundary and garden while supporting contemporary family life within the footprint of the existing suburban plot.
