Station Road
This project reimagines a generous family home, transforming it into a cohesive, light-filled environment, intrinsically linking indoor and outdoor space to enhance daily life. The original house contained a variety of rooms accumulated over time, yet many of these spaces were disconnected and difficult for the family to use together. The house had views of the garden, but it did not connect as easily as they would have liked, given its southern aspect.
The clients sought a more open and adaptable layout, centred around a larger kitchen, dining, and living area that could comfortably accommodate daily family life. In addition to these primary spaces, they requested more defined areas suitable for quieter activities such as reading and music.
The works involved the demolition of an existing rear kitchen and sunroom extension, internal reconfiguration, and the construction of a new single-storey extension to the rear. The scope also included landscape design and bathroom renovations, allowing the project to be approached holistically. During demolition, unforeseen structural issues were uncovered within the existing house, requiring remedial works. Although invisible in the finished project, addressing these issues was critical to ensuring the longevity and integrity of the home.
While contemporary in execution, the new extension has been carefully integrated with the original house. Landscaping plays a key role, with planting positioned directly adjacent to the rear façade. Over time, climbing plants such as vines and wisteria have softened the architecture, embedding it and seemlessly within the site and to the original dwelling. Full of light, with plenty of places to rest, reconnect or read, this design better supports a shared family life and strengthens its relationship with the garden.
