Access, Orientation and Sun-path were primary influences on the layout of the project. The urban concept of a formal space with a site-specific identity were examined and informed by orientation. The notion of a formal square or a linear park offered a strong identity. This then led to two separate lines of houses with a linear park on the East – West axis. The orientation of the back gardens, combined with a linear park and a loop road then became the natural evolved layout of the site.
Our approach to the housing design draws on the simplicity of vernacular architecture for form and detail whilst taking site specific characteristics for orientation and design. The roof form, wall, eaves and windows are detailed in a minimalist fashion much like vernacular cottage forms found around the country. From a site perspective the internal spaces are considered in terms of how they relate to the sun-path, e.g. each living space has a primary South/West aspect but also contains a slot window to bring morning East light into the space.
